Mid-Week Blues-Buster Week 3.03

Welcome to the Mid-Week Blues-Buster Flash Fiction Challenge, Year 3, Week 3.

This is a flash fiction challenge. The prompt is a song. You are not required to write about or even mention the song. It’s there only to get the ideas moving around in your brain pan. If you want to write about the song (or the video- it’s all good here) go for it but don’t feel like you have to.

We had a great turnout last week– ten big entries. Here’s hoping it’s the beginning of a trend and not just a blip on the radar…

The rules;
500 words, but it’s a slushy 500, meaning you can go up to 700 or as low as 300.
Post your entry right in the comments section of this post.

MAKE SURE TO PUT YOUR TWITTER HANDLE NEXT TO YOUR WORD COUNT AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR POST. IF YOU’RE NOT ON TWITTER GIVE ME AN EMAIL ADDRESS OR SOME OTHER WAY TO GET A HOLD OF YOU!.

The challenge starts whenever I post this on Tuesday and ends at MIDNIGHT PACIFIC TIME on Friday. You read that right. Pacific Time.

We’re doing something a little different with this week’s song prompt. Every so often, I like to throw something instrumental at our writers. Let the music to the talking, absorb the rhythms and the feel… let it take you somewhere…

The prompt is by Vas. The song is, “Moksha”.

Here’s the link; https://youtu.be/QPqixTXgnTM

This week’s Judge is NaNoWriMo writer and unrepentant bibliophile… Rose Ketring.

This is Rose’s first time out with us, so let’s give her lots to read!

The challenge starts as soon as you read this post and runs through MIDNIGHT PACIFIC TIME on Friday June 19th.

Now… Go Write!!!

    Abandoned church

Cherry frowned into the semidarkness of the empty building. Well, it was supposed to be empty, and that was the whole point of breaking in. Nobody would be able to witness while she, and her boyfriend obviously, had their own little piece of fun. It had always been a desire of hers to do it in the church. It had all seemed too good to be true when they
stumbled upon the abandoned building earlier that day. They had planned to come back that night and cross something from the bucket list.

She strained her ears as she stood completely still and listened for that noise that she had heard. The one that made her think that she and her boyfriend were not alone in that building.

He came up behind her and grabbed hold of her waist. “What’s wrong, Buttercup? Having second thoughts?”

“Shut up!” Cherry pushed him away with a bit more force than she intended. As he staggered backwards and fell nosily into a pew she instantly felt her anger melt away. The frown disappeared from her face as she moved to grab his arm. “Sorry, Sin, but I thought that I heard something. I am definitely not having second thoughts about this, because it is something that I have always wanted to do.”

    “Yeah, ‘cos you’re weird!”

She gave his arm a mock slap as a piece of retaliation. Cherry pointed towards the end of the aisle, and began to walk in that direction. “I reckon that we should do it right with the couples would take their wedding vows, because…” Her voice trailed away as she heard the noise again. She whirled around to face Sin. “Did you hear that?”

    “What is that?”

“I am glad that I am not the only one,” Cherry whispered as she started to work out which direction the noise was coming from. “It doesn’t sound like it is an animal. It sounds like group of people or something like that. Hey, maybe we have actually stumbled upon the secret meeting of a cult?”

“Now you are just being silly.”

“Seriously, it definitely is not an animal, and I would say that it is not a group of animals either. It sounds to me like some kind of music. They must be performing some kind of ritual.” She started walking towards a door that they could just see in the back wall. “I want in!”

“If something like that is going on, then we should just get out of here before anyone finds us.”

Ignoring his warning, Cherry reached the doorway and began to push it open. The music got louder as she did so, and she stood completely enthralled. She found herself in a room surrounded by cloaked figures like something out of a fiction book. They had not noticed her because they were too busy concentrating on whatever was in the middle of the circle that they made. At that point she should have backed away and left the strange scene somewhere behind her. For some reason, she found herself walking further into the room to try and see what was inside the circle.

That was when she felt the firm hands of her boyfriend planted on her back. He shoved her violently forwards so that she fell into the centre of the circle.

“What the…” She started to ask as she sat up on the floor. Her eyes widened as she saw Sin pulling up the hood of his own cloak.

“Curiosity killed the cat,” he muttered as the figures began to advance.

  2. “Curse of the Gods”
I never remembered how I got there. Perhaps it fell over me like a dark veil or a burial shroud; or maybe I was the one tumbling into it without preamble.

But, they were always filled with snakes that slithered and contorted into the shapes of smooth hips that swayed, seducing me like a silent metronome. I was terrified and allured all at once.

The line between fantasy and reality, friend or foe, had blurred beyond recognition, and I could not force myself to care. Self preservation was barely a whispered thought in the chaos of emotions that argued in my mind.

A riotous battle ensued within my pounding chest; I both moved toward the serpentine movements and wanted to recoil from the danger that surely lurked within each shifting curve.

I could not speak nor could I fight against the magnetism that pulled me forth.

I had never felt so akin to a moth, welcoming the scalding on my skin as I approached my certain death with my an unbridled desire for the joyous oblivion that laid just ahead burning me and tugging at me from the inside.

The creature’s villainous green orbs that it dared to call eyes called to me like a siren song, and the almost certainly venomous parting, smiling lips heated my blood to a rumbling boil.

My traitorous form sought to close the space between my parched mouth and the smirking grin before me. And as my dry lips were about to reach the smooth, cool oasis they yearned for, I was viciously and violently torn away from unconsciousness and flung into a puddle of my own stagnant sweat and twisted, over-heated sheets.

“No!” I croaked clutching the sheets only to remember I was alone once more (I had been alone).

That dream had been what those dreams always are, a taunt dangled before me by the gods.

  3. “I’d kill the bitch again, you know! I would!” Robert screamed through the bars of the cell at the pussy-whipped guards. “She got me fired!” Robert slammed his forearm into the bars, “So I shot her ass!”

Jailed for rape and murder. That was going to look good on his résumé. That’s what everyone would say. No one would say the truth. Framed by a whore, so he shot her. Of course no one would say that. They’d all side with that bitch.

Hell, he was a man! If a woman looked good, he told her she looked good. It’s what guys did. If she had boobs he wanted to see, he told her he wanted to see them. Nothing wrong with that. He was being honest, like his parents taught him.

Asking questions was curiosity on his part. “I don’t see any lines, do you wear thongs?” Curiosity, nothing more. Some days she had more cleavage than others. “One of those miracle bra things?” Curiousity was natural, wasn’t it?

He tried being helpful too, like when she wore a dress. “You have great legs. Why don’t you wear something a bit shorter, show off your legs more?” Constructive suggestions, that’s all. “Men go stupid around boobs. Show them off a bit, and they’ll give you everything you ask for.” Nothing sexist at all. He wasn’t harassing her. He was trying to help her.

He even tried being friendly, “I’m going to lunch, wanna come? I’ll buy.” She always declined. “Why do you never go to lunch with me?” She never answered.

He’d even tried being polite. “Women like flowers and candy, right? So, I left a flower on her desk once. And some chocolate once. What’s wrong with that?”

The boss called him to the office more than once. “Robert, you have to stop harassing Penny.”

    “But, I’m not harassing her.”

    “According to her, you are.”

They made him watch this stupid video about what sexual harassment in the workplace was. Made him take a test after the video. He got every question right, passed that stupid test. Proved he knew what harassment was.

“What’s wrong with telling her she looks pretty today?”

“Nothing wrong with telling her that, Robert.” The bos shook his head. “It’s how you say it. With that leer in your eyes and how you stare at her boobs.”

The meetings became more frequent. Turned out the bitch was filing sexual harassment reports against him. “He keeps asking what kind of underwear I wear. If I have on a push-up bra. Telling me I should wear shorter skirts.” There was more. “He keeps asking me out. He won’t take no for an answer.” And more. “He stares at me. Watches me all the time. Like he’s stalking me.” And it all ended with, “I can’t work with him. I don’t feel safe around him.”

After several months of her lies, several months of the boss talking with him, telling him to leave her alone, the company fired him. They didn’t let him resign. They fired him, and listed the reason as sexual harassment.

She got him fired! Cost him his job!

    That little bitch!

So, hell yes. He went to his truck, got his gun, and waited. He followed her home, snuck in. Finally did what he’d always wanted to with her. Found out she didn’t wear a thong, and her bra was not one of those sexy lace things like in the pictures on his computer. No, just plain underwear.

But he finally got to touch her boobs. While he was at it, he screwed her. Like he’d always fantasized about doing. That’d teach her to get him fired.

Then he shot her. Stuffed the gun barrel in her mouth, and pulled the trigger. “It’s what she deserved! She ruined my life! Got me fired!”

Life was so fucking unfair! God! He didn’t deserve any of this shit!

  4. – A Tentative Alliance –

Adapting on the fly comes naturally.

Sprinting across roofs, swinging over streets, and seeing in the dark are her specialties. Years of gymnastics and martial arts have made her body a finely tuned machine – agile, fierce, sinewy. While she races through The Sprawl, leading the bandits though a maddening game of hide-and-seek, her muscles are a jubilant symphony, ecstatic to be free of confinement and inactivity.

    Accepting responsibility comes by rote.

The skills acquired after the world went to shit the fourth or fifth time go unadvertised and come as a surprise to the few she allows to witness them. When the game is over and the prey trapped, cracking skulls, snapping bones, and crushing windpipes give her no pleasure but a mantle of serenity descends when the work is done.

She looks down at her slick hands, thinking how easily it might have been Luma or Emily’s blood, and her belly roils with conflicting emotions.

Pride in Kreuz’s nod of approval for her efficient ability to mete out death.

Relief and joy to see her beloved friend Luma alive – considerably weakened but gloriously alive.

And something tasting faintly of surprise as she realizes she’s still here, still part of this group of stragglers, against every instinct.

From beneath the sweaty tangle of her long hair, she glances up at Kreuz. “Never been one for lost causes or suicide missions. But I gave my word. To Luma. To Emily. And now I’m giving it to you.”

Wiping her hands on her pants and coiling her hair and tucking it down the back of her shirt, she scoops up Luma, shifting her body so the delicate face is shielded. “Rest, my dove. I’ll restore you as soon as we reach The Swan.”

Kissing Luma’s temple and tipping her chin to Kreuz, she falls in line, eyes finding the back of little Emily’s head and staying there, watchful as a mother hawk, deadly as a viper.
