Mid-Week Blues-Buster Week 2

Thanks to all who made the Mid-Week Blues-Buster a success!

On to Week 2!

This is a flash fiction challenge.  500 words is the target but you can go up to 700.  300 is the minimum.

The challenge runs from whenever I post this until 11:59PM on Thursday 2/28/13.

The prompt comes in the form of a song.  For this week’s Blues-Buster the chosen tune is;

“Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman.  Check it out here… http://youtu.be/XPcjjOrKmJw

You do not have to reference the tune in any way.  It’s here only to get the ideas flowing.  If the song or video influences you directly that’s bully for you but it’s not a requirement.

This week our judge will be the fantastic Ruth Long (@bullishink)

There will be a 1st Place winner, a 2nd Place Winner, and a 3rd Place Winner.

The prize?  For now, the prize is the satisfaction of creating a tale well-told.

Mid-Week Blues-Buster Week One Winners…

So I took a little time to decide on what format to use for challenge winners and I’ve settled on a simple 3rd Place, 2nd Place, 1st Place arrangement.

This is subject to change.

Picking winners from the 8 (Eight!  You people are awesome!) entries was not easy.  Each story had something to write home about in it but pick I did…

3rd Place – Jeremiah by The Fiction Vixen  This is an intense story with powerful imagery and an emotional punch

2nd Place – Bishop’s Pawn by Ruth Long  I love the rush of energy running through this story and the sharp dialogue

1st Place – All She Has by @scrivK  This one blew me away.  Tight prose, strong, blunt imagery, and a well-constructed plot.

A hearty mazel tov to our winners and to everyone who came out to write.

See you on Tuesday!

Mid-Week Blues-Buster Flash Fiction Challenge Week 01

Never fear….

The Mid-Week Blues-Buster is here!

This is a flash fiction challenge.  500 words is the target but you can go up to 700.  300 is the minimum.

The challenge runs from whenever I post this until 11:59PM on Thursday 2/21/13.

The prompt comes in the form of a song.  For this inaugural Blues-Buster the chosen tune is;

Freedom by Elayna Boynton & Anthony Hamilton.  Check it out here… http://youtu.be/_bdOTUocn5w

You do not have to reference the tune in any way.  It’s here only to get the ideas flowing.  If the song or video influences you directly that’s bully for you but it’s not a requirement.

I’ll be doing the judging honors this week…

The number of winners will depend on the number of entries we get.  I’ll probably take a few weeks to gauge interest in the challenge before deciding on a firm format for winners.

The prize?  For now, the prize is the satisfaction of creating a tale well-told.

Buck Wild – Love Bites Blog Hop

Here’s my entry for the Love Bites Blog Hop  http://www.bullishink.com/2013/02/08/love-bites-blog-hop/

Buck Wild

Poofy blond hair. Cherubic features. The guy across the table looked like a sap.

“I’m Detective Molloy,” I said. “You understand your rights as explained to you, Mr… Cupid?”

He nodded.

“Didn’t hear that.”

“Yes.”

“You’re waiving your right to counsel?”

“Yes.”

“All right.” I hit the record button and waited.

“I did it, Detective,” he said. “I shot him.”

He had a voice like Harvey Fierstein’s. Didn’t see that coming.

“With your bow and arrow? Why would you do something like that?”

He looked at me the way dogs look at helicopters.

“I’m the god of love.”

I nodded and wrote, “Psych. Eval.” on my notepad.

“I’ve done it thousands of times,” he said. “Millions, really. It’s never ended up like… this.”

“You mean a corpse with an arrow in it?”

“Didn’t think you’d believe me. Nobody believes anymore.”

“Just tell me how it happened.”

“He was next on the List so I plugged him in the heart. Like I’m supposed to.”

“Because you’re the god of love.”

“Except instead of falling for that cute redhead he dropped dead.”

“You’re sure it was your bow?”

He had to think.

“It… looked like my bow.”

My phone went off. Text message. I read it and got up.

“Gotta run. We just got a call from a bowhunter. Claims he’s being terrorized by a, ‘goddam horny deer.’”

Introducing the Mid-Week Blues-Buster…

So….. how do you feel about the middle of the work week?  If your answer is, “I love it like the inside of a shit sandwich”, you’ve come to the right place.

One week from today, on this very blog, the new flash fiction challenge known as The Mid-Week Blues-Buster will début.  Yep.  You heard right.  Flash fiction challenge, right here at The Tsuruoka Files.

Here are the particulars;

We’ll be using a slushy 500 word limit, meaning, if you’re on a roll and need a few more words to really nail your story go ahead and take ’em.  Up to 700 words.  Works the other way too.  500 is the goal but if you only need 300 that’s okey.  But 300 is the minimum.

Prompt, you ask?  Why, yes, there will be a prompt.  The prompt will be a song.  A link to either a video or audio file will be posted here each Tuesday, no later than 8PM Eastern Time.  The song and/or video are there to get the ideas flowing.  You do not have to reference the song or even mention it.  If you want to then bully for you but you don’t have to.

The challenge runs from whenever I post the song on Tuesday to 11:59PM (EST) on Thursday.

If this all sounds a lot like Sweet Banana’s Friday Night Write to you then…. you’re just so observant.  The Mid-Week Blues-Buster blatantly rips off– I mean, respectfully pays homage to Friday Night Write and it’s creators.

Judges?  Yes, there will be judges.  I’ll be doing the judging until I manage to put together a slate of volunteer guest judges.  The judging aspect may or may not be something I stick with.  I like the idea of collecting the responses for our mutual enjoyment, ala Five Sentence Fiction and Visual Dare.  But who doesn’t love a contest?  This is a work in progress so stay tuned… I’ll make up my mind on this part of it by next Tuesday.

Prizes?  Yeah. There might be prizes involved at some point but for right now your prize will be the pride you feel for creating a tale well-told.

Badges?  Do we need stinkin’ badges?  Yeah.  I think so.  If someone more creative than me (meaning everyone drawing air on the planet at this moment) has something we can use or feels like making one I’d be much obliged.  Otherwise I’ll be perusing free clip-art for a usable image.

That’s about it…

Please Tweet this up, spam your friends on Facebook, etc.  I’d love to hit the ground running…

Regards,

JT
