Snippet Sunday – Hard-Boiled/Noir WIP – September 27, 2015

Snippet Sunday is a Facebook group for writers I’ve been privileged enough to have been accepted into.

From the group guidelines; “Welcome to Snippet Sunday, where writers come together to share a few sentences of their current project–whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.”

We’re picking up pretty much where we left off last week– Jake and Sheriff Jones are having a discussion outside of Marisa’s abandoned house…

We didn’t have much to say to each other until we reached the cars. His cruiser looked standard-issue, which meant he probably had to take his hat off to fit inside.

“How much is Jed paying you to find his wife for him, Jake?” he asked. He didn’t bother to try to hide the contempt when he used Jed’s name.

“I told you, Sheriff,” I said, leaning against the side of my Olds. “I’m not doing it for him.”

“Right,” he said, “you’re just looking for a friend,” He smirked at me. “I heard you’d made, uh, friends with Marisa Reubens.”

“Jed’s her ex-husband the way I hear it.”

“Ex-nothing,” he replied. “Those two run hot and cold on each other so I’d watch my ass if I were you.” He hit me with the cop glare. “And you didn’t answer my question.”

“I haven’t taken a cent of Jed’s money, Sheriff.”

“Yet.

“That’s between him and me.”

“And me, Mr. Tunner.”

“We’re back to Mr. Tunner?”

“You’re obligated to check in with local law enforcement when you’re working in their jurisdiction.”

“I know, Sheriff,” I said. “And the minute I’m getting paid for my time I’ll come right in to see you.”

He put a hand on my shoulder.

“I’m not a difficult man to get along with,” he said. “All I ask is honesty and a little respect.”

“You’re getting both from me.”

He gave me the stink-eye, but his jaw wasn’t clenched and his body language didn’t involve crossed arms or reaching for his handcuffs.

“I think we’ve reached the point where you either arrest me or send me on my way,” I said.

Thanks for stopping by to check out my stuff and thanks for any feedback you feel inclined to leave.

  1. I like the sheriff, but cops often have an overinflated idea of what they deserve to know about someone’s personal business. Great snippet, Jeff! 🙂

Love the banter with these two. Now what will the sheriff do? I know what he liked to do, but I have a hunch, he’ll let Jake go…for now. 🙂 Great snippet!

  8. Yeah, I agree with the last line. Why the hell are the authority getting involved at every turn. I mean I understand not liking outsiders but they are getting a bit annoying. And still we don’t know what’s in the house…

  9. I’m not sure he’s getting ALL of the truth from Jake, and I think he thinks the same thing.

  10. I love his confidence in what he’s doing with the Sheriff! But the hot and cold hint makes me wonder if something is going to come from that sooner or later. And, as always, love your descriptions.

  11. This is such a great, subtle detail: “which meant he probably had to take his hat off to fit inside.” The car is small, or the hat is big, or both. Love it.

  12. I get the feeling the sheriff isn’t a difficult man to get a long with… but could be,
