#SnippetSunday – Hard-Boiled/Noir WIP – May 3, 2015
Snippet Sunday is a Facebook group for writers I’ve been privileged enough to have been accepted into.
From the group guidelines; “Welcome to Snippet Sunday, where writers come together to share a few sentences of their current project–whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.”
This week’s snippet picks up where last week’s left off… Jake has just won his rematch with the big guy who knocked him out back at the hotel when Marisa leaves the scene of the fight in the big guy’s own truck. Now the local constabulary has arrived on the scene, asking the combatants if they’re done…
“For now, Sheriff Norris,” I said, reading the man’s name from the brass nameplate pinned over his left chest pocket.
“Deputy Norris,” he corrected, “though I’m sure Sheriff Jones is going to want a word with you before long.”
I kept my trap shut.
“You all right, Jed?” he asked, stepping toward my opponent.
“I’ll live,” replied the big man. He didn’t look away from the far end of Main Street.
“Feel like pressing charges, Jed?” asked the deputy.
“Charges?” I butted in. “For what?”
“Grand theft auto, unless that wasn’t Jed’s truck that just blew town.”
Jed dismissed Deputy Norris with a wave of his hand.
“She’s not going far,” he said, sounding like a deflated balloon given voice. “She never does.”
Thanks for stopping by to read, and thanks for any feedback you feel inclined to leave.
