#SnippetSunday – As Yet Unnamed WIP (Vigilante/Noir) – October 26, 2014

Snippet Sunday is a Facebook group for writers I’ve been privileged enough to have been accepted into.

From the group guidelines;

“Welcome to Snippet Sunday, where writers come together to share a few sentences of their current project–whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.”

This week’s snippet is more of last week’s scene with Satsuke and Meyer in Satsuke’s martial arts studio. Satsuke has just asked Meyer to show her what he did in the previous night’s fight. The action picks up immediately after he tells her about the Phone Booth’s attack, which she mimics…

She threw a quick, stiff left jab– quicker and stiffer than the Phone Booth’s effort.
I hustled to evade the punch, diving far enough in to feel the heat coming off her body.
“Why so close to the attacker?” she asked.
I caught a whiff of the blood orange she’d eaten after her morning workout.
“Takes away his power. I’ll still get hit but there won’t be much on it.”
“Good,” she said. “Next?”
“He missed.”
Her right fist grazed my ear on its way through.
“Your response?”
“Palm-heel strike.” I raised my hand to the side of her jaw. “Here.”
“Why here?”
“Compresses the nerve. Knocks him out without breaking bones.”

Thanks for reading!

    • That, and it gives me the chance to explain some of the science behind the fighting style used. I think it’s important to emphasize that it’s an art, not just random violence.Thanks for reading and commenting, as always!
